Taiwan Film Series :  Documentary and Short Films

Hanlin Chinese Culture Association and Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States are pleased to present Taiwan Film Series on June 13  and 14 at Delaware Art Museum and the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts.  Award winning documentaries and short films are presented for the first year of Taiwan Film Series. Shonenko (2006), directed by Liang-Yin Kuo,  records the episode of Taiwanese teenage boys shipped to Japan during the War World II; and The Secret in the Satchel (2007), directed by Tay-jou Lin, provides a glimpse to the complex and troubled interpersonal relationship confronted by the new generation of students. Both film were selected at 2009 MOMA’s Documentary Fortnight series. 

Three other documentaries: Let it Be (2001) follows the everyday life of three elderly rice farmers and the fascinating dynamics of their relationships with each other, their animals, gods, the weather, and land; Tea-Taiwan’s Golden Treasure (2001) explores the art of tea drinking and how it nourishes Taiwanese everyday life; Skillful Hands and Artistic Vision (2005) presents the contemporary Taiwanese handicrafts combine culture, production and creativity.

Three recently produced shorts films include: Family Viewing, the End of The Tunnel, and Summer Afternoon all have been awarded/selected at international film festivals including Grand Prize Award at Brest European Short Film Festival 2008 in France and World premiered at Directors’ Fortnight of Cannes Film Festival 2008. 

This is the first year of Taiwan Film Series presented by Hanlin Chinese Culture Association and Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States with the sponsorship by Council for Cultural Affairs in Taiwan, Taipei Culture Center in New York, Delaware Art Museum and Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts.

Tom Vick Speaks at the Opening of

the Film Series

Tom Vick is one of the foremost experts on Asian cinema.  He is the film programmer for the Freer and Sackler Galleries of the Smithsonian Institution, where he organizes film series and retrospectives of Asian films.  Grown up in Delaware valley, PA, Tom went west to study film at CalArts (California Institute of the Arts) where in the class called “Film Today”, he first saw films by Hou Hsian-Hsien, Wong Kar-wai, and many Asian directors as he mentioned in his interview by ReelDC.  He worked for LACAM’s(Los Angeles County Museum of Art) film series as assistant programmer before joining the Smithsonian.    

His recent book,  Asian Cinema: A Field Guide , is the first book to provide a complete overview of the past, present and future of the world’s most dynamic and influential filmmaking region.  Over 300 films from China, India, Japan, Korea, Iran and Taiwan and other emerging regions are all included in the book.  Tom will give a brief introduction to the Taiwan Documentaries and short films at 1:00pm, Saturday, June 13th at DCCA.
