Following our successful first exhibition, West meets East: Encounter with Chinese Arts at the Delaware Art Museum, Hanlin is very pleased to be one of the sponsors of the exhibition In a Collective Spirit: Sculpture Works and Furniture at the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts. The exhibition connects East and West through furniture objects and sculptural installations created by artist Tom Huang. The exhibition will be on view at the DCCA from May 20-September 7, 2008.

Tom Huang grew up in Wilmington, Delaware. Huang’s parents came from Taiwan and it is through his upbringing from which he inherited a deep understanding of his Chinese cultural background. He has been very interested in the relationship between the East and West and he employs traditional and contemporary techniques and materials to express this point of view.

Huang’s installation, Coolies, demonstrates the artist’s awareness of history and his respect for the labor of Chinese immigrants. “Coolies”, originally a non-pejorative term for a laborer who usually carried a bamboo pole, eventually became a negative term under colonialism. Huang creates an exceptionally beautiful installation utilizing bamboo and many traditional weaving techniques to pay homage to the countless “Coolies” who built the American railway.

Bamboo has long been favored by Chinese poets and artists for its symbolic value of humbleness and integrity. Please join us on June 6, 2008 at 7 pm for a free bamboo demonstration and lecture presented by Tom Huang held at DCCA. Tom Huang has woven the traditional concept with his modern rendition, and during his demonstration Huang will explore the versatile quality from the nature of bamboo.

Tom Huang holds an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and a BA in Architecture from Washington University in St. Louis. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Industrial Design at the University of Kansas. This exhibition is sponsored, in part, by the Delaware Center of Contemporary Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts and the Delaware Division of the Arts.
