Hanlin Chinese Culture Association in conjunction with Delaware Art Museum will hold a celebration of Chinese New Year of Ox at Delaware Art Museum on Sunday January 18th, 2009 from noon to 3:30pm. The Happy Puppetry Company from Taiwan will perform two puppet shows, one is the legendary play - “Wu-Song: The Tiger Fighter”, featuring a traditional styles of hand puppet theater accompanied by the Chinese music ensemble, the second one is “Carnival of Taiwanese Hand Puppetry”.  Many hands-on art activities for family enjoyment include Chinese paper folding, Chinese Tangram Puzzle games for kids (the oldest Chinese puzzle using geometrical pieces to create image), puppet doll making, Chinese yo-yo and Chinese spring couplet calligraphy demonstrations etc.

“Wu-Song, the Tiger Fighter” is a humorous and exciting play that integrates martial art with colorful story and acrobatic actions. Wu-Song left his family when he was young to learn Kung-Fu. When he was on his way back home to visit his brother, he passed through a village that was haunted by a fearless tiger. So Wu-Song decided to fight the tiger to save the people.  This play has various types of roles based on the traditional Chinese theatre, similar to Beijing Opera, including Sheng (male character), Dan (female character), Jing (painted face male character), Chou (comical role) and Zah (miscellaneous role). The audiences will appreciate the exquisite craftsmanship associated with the fine stage, carved and painted wooden puppets, embroidered costumes.

“Carnival of Taiwanese Hand Puppetry” will show the highly intricate movements performed by hand puppets such as calligraphy writing, lion dance, ribbon dancing etc.

The puppet master will demonstrate the puppet arts at 3PM after the performance.
