Mingmei Yip grew up in Hong Kong, and from a young age, she has had a consuming interest in the traditional arts of China. She is an accomplished calligrapher and painter but, more uniquely, is a skilled performer on the most ancient Chinese musical instrument, the qin. Yip recently turned her talents and knowledge of Chinese cultural history to writing a novel, Peach Blossom Pavilion, which relates the adventures of a mingji (Chinese courtesan artist) who was a qin player, poet, and calligrapher. (The mingji was the predecessor of the Japanese geisha.) Peach Blossom Pavilion was published by Kensington Books in June 2008 and is now in its 5th printing. Her second novel, Petals from the Sky, is a Buddhist love story, and her upcoming book, Song of the Silk Road, is a romantic adventure. Yip has nine books to her credit. Her other English book, Chinese Children’s Favorite Stories (Tuttle), which she wrote and illustrated, has sold over 35,000 copies. She is now writing and illustrating her second children’s book for Tuttle to be released in 2011. Yip received her Ph. D. in ethnomusicology from the University of Paris, Sorbonne, on full academic scholarship from the French Government. She was appointed lecturer in music at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and later senior lecturer at Hong Kong Baptist University. Yip frequently performs on the qin, and she often combines her performances with brief explanatory lectures. She has also been invited to teach cadets at the U. S. Military Academy, West Point, about Sunzi’s famous military tactics book, The Art of War. She has appeared on over 60 television and radio programs in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China, and in many newspaper articles. She has also co-hosted a major English language television documentary on Chinese opera and has produced several concerts of Chinese Buddhist and Daoist music.
